Giving Through Wills and Testaments
By including Shedrub Development Fund in your will or testament, you ensure that the resources created throughout your lifetime will have deeply positive impacts on future generations.
Fortunately, each of us can prepare for the inevitability of death in a thoughtful and generous way. We can acknowledge that even in death, our power to benefit others is still fully present.
If you are inspired to give in this way, we recommend that you consider the examples shown below for the formulation of your will or trust. If you have any questions regarding any of the words or concepts mentioned in this section, please contact us.
Your Will: A Life's Gift
A will is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways of ensuring that your family and friends are provided for while helping Shedrub Development Fund serve the Buddhist tradition for many generations to come. To prepare your estate plan, follow these simple steps:
(1) List the people important to you
(2) List the charitable institutions important to you
(3) List your assets
(4) Decide on the distribution of your assets
(5) Gather your facts
(6) Visit your attorney
If you wish to remember Shedrub Development Fund in your will, a simple codicil is all that is needed. Examples of the various types of bequests that you can make and the appropriate language for each are included below. If you should require any further assistance or sample forms, please contact us
Unrestricted Gifts: These are gifts that are given to Shedrub Development Fund that help the Foundation itself and potentially all of its ongoing projects.
If you would like to leave a certain sum of money to the Shedrub Development Fund, include the following language:
“I give to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine, the sum of $___________ for Shedrub Development Fund’s general purposes.”
If you would like to leave a certain percentage of your estate to the Shedrub Development Fund, include the following language:
“I give to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine, ___% of my estate for Shedrub Development Fund’s general purposes.”
If you would like to leave all of your remaining assets to the Shedrub Development Fund (whatever is left after other gifts have been granted), include the following language:
“All the remainder of my estate, including real and personal property, I give to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine, for Shedrub Development Fund’s general purposes.”
If you would like your property to pass to the Shedrub Development Fund only if all of your other beneficiaries have died or declined to accept your bequests, include the following language:
"If the above named beneficiaries predecease me or disclaim any interest in [description of the property], I give my residuary estate to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine, for its exempt purposes."
Restricted Gifts: These are gifts that exclusively help one of Shedrub Development Fund’s ongoing projects.
For example, imagine that you wanted to make a gift to Pal Thubten Shedrub Ling Monastery in Lumbini. To leave a certain sum of money to this program, you would include the following language:
“I give to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine, the sum of $___________ for Pal Thubten Shedrub Ling Monastery in Lumbini, Nepal.”
If you would like to leave a certain percentage of your estate for this monastery, you would include the following language:
“I give to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine, ___% of my estate for Pal Thubten Shedrub Ling Monastery in Lumbini, Nepal.”
If you would like to leave all of your remaining assets for the monastery in Lumbini (whatever is left after other gifts have been granted), include the following language:
“All the remainder of my estate, including real and personal property, I give to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine for Pal Thubten Shedrub Ling Monastery in Lumbini, Nepal.”
If you would like your property to pass property to the Shedrub Development Fund for the monastery in Lumbini, only if all of your other beneficiaries have died or declined to accept your bequests, include the following language:
“If the above named beneficiaries predecease me or disclaim any interest in [description of the property], I give my residuary estate to the Shedrub Development Fund, a nonprofit corporation created under the laws of the state of Delaware, located in Northampton, Maine, for Pal Thubten Shedrub Ling Monastery in Lumbini, Nepal.”
If you would like your property to go to another project of the Shedrub Development Fund, you would replace “for Pal Thubten Shedrub Ling Monastery in Lumbini, Nepal” with the appropriate phrase indicating the way in which you wish your property to be used.
